Voss Road Project
The City is currently in the process of reconstructing Voss Road and Bracher Drive. This project includes the complete reconstruction of the roadway pavement and drainage systems, as well as the replacement of the existing water lines and the rehabilitation of the sanitary sewer system.
The project consists of three separate construction contracts – one for the sewer rehabilitation, one for the water line construction, and a third one for the paving and drainage construction. The sewer rehabilitation work was undertaken by PM Construction during the late spring and early summer, and has been completed at this time. The water line replacement work has been undertaken by the City’s Utility Department on an in-house basis and will be completed in the next few weeks. The paving and drainage construction began in late June, and is being performed by Conrad Construction Company. The paving and drainage construction is scheduled to be complete in June of 2008.
Roadway improvements include replacement of the existing roadway with a concrete pavement with curbs and a storm sewer drainage system. In addition, the City is replacing the wooden bridge over Briar Branch with a concrete bridge designed to TxDOT standards. As a part of the reconstruction of the roadway, sidewalks will be constructed along the west side of the street throughout the project limits, and along the east side in the area between the freeway frontage road and Green Valley. These paving and drainage improvements are being paid for in part by Metro, under their General Mobility Program. Metro is providing a total of $ 3,305,000 in funds for the design and construction of the project. The City is providing the remainder of the funding for this project in the amount of approximately $ 1.5 million.
The utility improvements undertaken in conjunction with the roadway project consist of complete replacement of the water lines along these streets, including replacement of all of the water lines crossing these streets. Additional fire hydrants are being provided in some locations as well. The water system replacement represents an additional $ 103,000 in materials and outside contract work, plus the value of the City Utility Crew’s time and effort.
The sanitary sewer system has been rehabilitated using pipe-bursting techniques, which allow the existing pipes to be reconstructed in place, reducing the amount of open excavation that needs to be done. The rehabilitation work includes also includes lining of the existing sanitary manholes to reduce infiltration and to improve the structural integrity of the system. The sanitary sewer rehabilitation work associated with the Voss – Bracher project included rehabilitation of the sewer lines on a number of the side streets along the project alignment. The rehabilitation work for Voss - Bracher represents approximately $ 314,000 in additional construction costs.
Both the water and sanitary sewer improvements included replacement of the service connections for each home.
