Robert A. Vines Environmental Science Center Programs

The Science Center was originally designed to provide an environmental education program that would enrich the science curriculum of SBISD. From this initial concept, the Science Center has expanded and diversified into a recognized community museum which attracts nearly 40,000 visitors each year. A wide range of programs and services are provided to both district students and public visitors year round.

The science instructional program at the Science Center involves students in the elementary and secondary schools. The Science Center program is directly correlated with the District's science curriculum, and the learning-by-doing, hands-on approach to teach science concepts promotes instructional success among all students. The Science Center also sponsors special science programs in the fall and summer for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The science materials loan service is provided to all district teachers, supplying hundreds of specimens, kits, films, videos, slides, living materials and up-to-date computer weather data for classroom use.

Adult Natural History Travel Programs and Seminars are provided through the Science Center and the District's Continuing Education Department. These programs are designed for both the novice and experienced nature enthusiast. Other public activities include special traveling exhibitions, open houses and guided tours by trained docent volunteers.
